Knights baseball team prepares for Regionals

After a 29 game regular season, the Northern Essex baseball team finished with a final record of 19-10, winning their last 16 of 21 contests.

The Knights opened up their season inMarch, going down to New Jersey and Pennsylvania to play two top 10 nationally rankedopponents: Northampton Community College and Rowan-Gloucester.

After losing all four games to Rowan-Gloucester, NECC came back with a commanding 3-1 series win the followin  gweekend at Northampton.

After a few rough patches early in the season, the Knights started to put the pieces together when April came around.

The weekend of May 22nd is when the Northern Essex baseball team plans to head back down to Rowan for the NJCAA Regionals with a chance to go to the World Series in Tennessee.

With about two weeks before their next scheduled game, they are going to intersquad weekly to keep the competitive edge in the team.

Coach Mejia is looking forward to getting the chance toplay Rowan again.

He is confident in his team’s ability, and the level of baseball that they wereplaying in March is incomparable to how they have played in recent games.

This past baseball season was unlike any other due to covid restrictions and different state’s laws regarding social distancing.

Northern Essex usually kicks off the season with 10-12 games in Florida during spring vacation, and then returns to conference play against othe rcommunity colleges for the remainder of the season.

For the 2021 season, Northern Essex was one of the only community colleges to pursue having a season.

Every team in the conference that Northern Essex competes in cancelled their season, including rival Community College of Rhode Island. This caused the Knights to play NCAA sanctioned schools when they were available, making it tougher opponents and less games.

Even though there have been many ups and downs to the season, the Knights have continued to persevere and stay focused on their goals.

The Knights are hot come playoff time

The Northern Essex baseball team has picked up their level of play in recent games, winning 11 out of their last 13 games.

After losing on a walk off walk to Eastern CT, the Knights went on a 5 game win streak before dropping two games in a double header to UCONN AveryPoint.

Dylan Duval, a returner and team captain, has done a phenomenal job being a leader on and off the field.

Whether he is catching all 14 innings in a double header, or making sure that al lof the team equipment is taken care of, he is one of the most focused guys on the field.

Duval is a huge factor in the Knight’s success.

“The older guys on the team that have been around for a few years are so important to theprogram. They set the tone for the younger guys and show them how high expectations arearound here.” said Captain Hunter Wilichoski. “We have a bunch of kids that have been here for a few years because of either injuries or Covid, they know how things work around here.”

CoachMejia has very high expectations of his players, and rightfully so. Considering that he has made it to more NJCAA World Series’ than he hasn’t, losing is not taken lightly by anyone.

The Knights ended the regular season by winning 2 games of a doubleheader against Eastern CT,ending the season with a final record of 19-10.

With about three weeks before playoffs, NECC looks to tighten a few things up beforeheading down to New Jersey for regionals. They are looking forward to their rematch with national powerhouse Rowan-Gloucester on the weekend of May 22nd.

NECC golf team prepares for nationals

Due to COVID restrictions this past year, the golf program has not been able to get their season going.

There were a lot of question marks in early March and they weren’t even sure if playing matches this year was going to be possible.

The NECC Golf roster is small this year, with only four players attending matches. Three of those players happen to also play baseball at NECC.

Outfielder Nick White and right handed pitchers Todd Tringale and Tom Cattaneo are the three
athletes who will be playing both baseball and golf this spring.

White is a spark plug on the course, spinning his chip shots left and right like the great Phil Mickelson. The fourth member of the team is John Messina, a long driving machine witha great touch on the greens.

Home matches are usually played at Atkinson Country Club in New Hampshire, a beautiful course with
a par 3 9 hole and full 18.

Coach Dube has hopes of scheduling a few matchesbefore June, but there is nothing planned for now.

Since the season was cut short becauseof COVID, NECC receives an automatic bid to the NJCAA national championship in early June.

The championship is played during the week of June 7th-11th at Chautaqua Golf Club in upstate New York.

Burrill wins national pitcher of the week

Levi Burrill, an Amesbury native, took the mound in game two of the Knights doubleheader against nationally ranked Northampton Community College on March 22.

Burrill is one of the captains for the baseball team and is headed to play baseball at Franklin Pierce next year.

He has been around Coach Mejia and the NECC baseball program for a few years and iso ne of the top guys on the team.

Not only does he get it done on the field, but he is a favorite with all of his teammates.

When game 2 of Saturday’s games started, Burrill wasted no time getting settled in.

Theweather in Bethlehem, PA was the nicest it’s been all year and it came at the right time for NECC.

Burrill had all of his pitches working that day, especially his changeup.

Northampton struggled with his offspeed pitches and when they did put the ball in play, the Knights defense was there to back up Burrill.

The Knights won game 2 by a score of 3-2, including an 11 strikeout full game performance from Burrill which won him National Player of the Week.

“I felt good when I woke up today and just had that feeling. We had a really good week of practice after we got back from New Jersey and guys were ready to go this weekend. We had big hits all day from Logan Burrill, Joe Muzio, and Clay Campbell. I just had to go out there and compete.”

Competing is what he did, throwing over 100 pitches and having double digit strikeouts for his team.

“I love these guys and I love the coaches. We’re really lucky to get the chance to playbecause a lot of teams got cancelled this spring. I’m just really happy that I get to have a seasonwith my teammates after everything we’ve been through.”

The baseball team got back to action on March 25 with a double header against Fisher College at Fraser Field in Lynn.

Baseball team opens season with doubleheader

The Northern Essex Baseball team opened their season with a doubleheader on March 7 and 8.

After no season in 2020, the team was excited to get back onto the field again. Saturday’s games were played down in Quincy, MA against Eastern Nazarene, where they lost the first game 6-1 and then bounced back with a commanding 18-7 win in the second game.

On Sunday they made the trip all the way down to Connecticut, where they faced Mitchell college in another doubleheader.

The first game went to extra innings until they eventually ended up losing 6-4 on a walk off home run. Just like Saturday’s games, the team came back and took the second game with a 6-1 win to end the weekend.

It was a long first weekend for them with wind chills in the low 20s on both days, but they managed to pull out wins when they needed to on both days.

The team has a midweek game scheduled for Tuesday against Fisher College, before they get ready to go down to New Jersey this weekend.

They are scheduled to play 2 more double headers vs. Rowan Gloucster on Saturday and Sunday.

“Overall, I thought we had a good weekend as a team. We have some things to work on, but it was our first time playing outside and with the weather we got, mistakes are going to happen. I’m excited for what’s to come for sure.” said Captain Ronnie Luke, who also got his first win in Game 2 on Saturday night.

Baseball program adjusts to COVID-19 safety protocols

Ever since the Coronavirus struck the U.S. last March, the country has had to deal withmany changes in our everyday lives. From wearing masks at all times, to socially distancing in public, to not hanging out in big groups or meeting new people; it is safe to say that our world has been converted into something no one could ever imagine.

No one can be too sure when our society is going to return back to the way it was, but for now people need to be ready to adjust to certain things they might not like.

The guidelines that the baseball team needs to follow to stay safe have made their team practices “somewhat difficult, but understandable,” from the words of Captain Levi Burrill.

The players have to get their temperature taken every morning before practice, masks must never come off, covid testing is required every other week, and the players need to social distance from each other as often as possible.

Unlike their practices last year, the team doesn’t get many chances to practice as a whole. For the first few weeks they were practicing, it was individual work so that the players could stay in small groups and somewhat isolate from each other. In my interview with Burrill, he said, “We all understand why these rules are in place. People need to stay safe and healthy, and we’re lucky to get the chance to play everyday, because a lotof people can’t right now. It’s going to be easier for us when we can get back outside on thefield.”

These are just a few of the changes that the players needed to make going into the season.

The team practices are not the only thing that has changed drastically since last year.

Another big part in the offseason is when the baseball team gets together to lift as a team 4 timesa week.

Last year, there was not a time or person limit on the weight room that NECC has in thea thletic building. As long as you were a NECC student and signed in with your ID, you could go exercise for as long as you’d wish.

With Covid protocols this year, the team lifts that the baseball team usually participates in had to be severely altered. There were small groups that had assigned times during certain days of the week, and they only got that small window to work out in.

The final team lift competition was cancelled this year because of the virus which issomething that the players really look forward to every year.

Hunter Wilichoski, a sophomorecaptain on the team, said, “It’s unfortunate that our lifting competition got cancelled this year.We all work out with each other for months during the off season and the competition is when we finally get to settle who is the strongest. It’s a create team bonding experience right before our practices start, and we’re all sad we had to miss out on it this year.”

The NECC baseball program has had to go through some growing pains with dealing with the virus, but they are finding a way to make it work. They open up their season playing Rowan CC in New Jersey on March 13 and 14.
