The YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) has welcomed new national board members, including NECC alumni Nayeli Almanzar Lizardo, who has been named  to the Youth Advisory Council.

Nationwide, only 3.8% of YMCA board members are under the age of 30. As a youth-serving organization, the Y has the opportunity to move the needle on the representation of young people on its governing boards. The Youth Advisory Council was formed in 2023 to apply a youth lens to emerging issues. Working with Y-USA leadership, the Youth Advisory Council is comprised of 21 individuals, ranging in age from 16-24 from across the country. The strategy behind the Youth Advisory Council is to shift the paradigm and recognize young people as active contributors rather than passive recipients of programs and services.

Almanzar Lizardo, Merrimack Valley YMCA, is a first-generation scholar, from Northern Essex Community College, now studying at University of Massachusetts, Lowell. “I am dedicated and passionate about implementing positive change within underserved communities by amplifying their voices to provide equitable and accessible resources,” said Almanzar Lizardo. “Eager to contribute meaningfully through collaboration and innovative cause-driven solutions, I am ready to champion the YMCA’s future, empowering us all.”

Professor to release his fourth book

Rich Padova, history and government professor at Northern Essex will be releasing his fourth book next month which will be complimentary for anyone who would like a copy.  Titled The First 100 Days: FDR to Biden, the book examines the first 100 days of presidential administrations beginning with Franklin Delano Roosevelt and ending with incumbent President Joe Biden.

Since the days of FDR and ever since, scholars and journalists have examined the first 100 days of presidential administrations to see if campaign promises were fulfilled during this time period and if anything else of significance was accomplished.  Professor Padova, with the research assistance of some of his GOV 101 students from the Fall Semester of 2023, takes a look at the first 100 days.

Students, faculty and staff who would like a complimentary copy are invited to contact Rich at rpadova@necc.mass.edu to reserve a copy and make arrangements for pick-up.  Copies will also be available from Rich this summer at Lawrence Heritage State Park, 1 Jackson Street at Canal.

Volunteers sought to help with book

Professor Rich Padova is recruiting students to help with research, writing

Northern Essex and UMass-Lowell history instructor Rich Padova is seeking NECC students who are interested in volunteering some of their time to assist in the research and writing of his third book, scheduled for release in 2020.

Students will be able to set their own hours and work at their own pace this semester

and/or next, from any location.

Student volunteers will also be publicly recognized and acknowledged in the book for their efforts.

In addition to learning advanced research skills and writing techniques, students will also learn about source selection, citation standards and editing, as well as historiography and, overall, the world of book publishing.

Padova’s  first book, First In The Nation (2007) is an account of his experiences on the campaign trail from 1980 to 2004 in New Hampshire’s presidential primary.

His second book, Who Are They? (2017) looks at the lives of the second ladies (vice presidential spouses) of the U.S. from Abigail Adams to Karen Pence.

The as-of-yet un-named third book will examine the lives of men and women who have unsuccessfully sought the U.S. presidency – some well-known and others not.

This past summer, personal interviews were conducted with former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, former Massachusetts Gov. Mike Dukakis and former New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith.

Students who are interested in learning more about the volunteer opportunities for the book or who have any questions may contact Padova at rpadova@necc.mass.edu or leave a message on his office telephone at 978-556-3297.
