A deep dive into ‘Cowboy Carter’

“This ain’t a Country album. This is a “Beyoncé album.,” is what Beyoncé posted on Instagram before the release of her much-anticipated 8th studio album “Cowboy Carter”, a country inspired 27-track record. The record, which includes two hit singles “Texas Hold ‘Em” and 16 Carriages”, is the second installment of a trilogy of albums, following her 7th studio album “Renaissance”. Renaissance celebrated the influence of Black queer culture and house music, while Cowboy Carter celebrates the Black influence in southern American culture and history. Inspired by Beyoncé’s performance of her song “Daddy’s Lessons” at the 2016 Country Music Awards, in which she states, “I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” Beyoncé allowed herself to investigate the history behind American Country music, ultimately coming up with Cowboy Carter.

Like many albums Beyoncé has released previously, love, heartbreak, and self-identity are common themes on this record. In “16 Carriages”, one of the lead singles on the album, Beyoncé opens up about her personal life and how working as a child affected her as an adult. She mentions her launch to fame at 15 in the girl group Destiny’s Child, and then alludes to struggles in her present life, creating a heartbreaking and beautiful glimpse into one of America’s most hardworking performers. The 4th track on the album “Protector”, delves even further into Beyoncé’s life, as she reveals her life as a mother, showing her conflicting feelings between wanting to protect her children, but knowing she must allow them to go out on their own.

Beyoncé’s journey of self-love and relationships continues in a more fiery and spiteful tone with “Jolene”, a cover of the famous Dolly Parton track, in which Parton features. “Dolly P” introduces Beyoncé’s cover of her song, with a new twist to it, as Beyoncé changes the lyrics to the original hit, issuing a warning to Jolene to stay away from her man. This track adds a fierce tone to the album, showing people that Beyoncé is not messing around about her love life and self-identity. This fiery streak is continued in the next two tracks on the album “Daughter”, which dives into Beyoncé’s struggles of identity and self-doubt, and “Spaghettii” which explains the struggles Black artists have faced in the country music industry and how Beyoncé expects to change them. Both songs play into the nature of anger and destruction, with Beyoncé being fed up with issues of identity as a black country woman. “Alligator Tears” is a sweet and simple love song, referring to the phrase “crocodile tears” meaning tears that are shed by a hypocrite or someone who doesn’t feel bad about the choices they’ve made. Beyoncé explains loving someone so much, it doesn’t matter what they do, with many fans believing she is referring to Jay-Z’s past infidelity. The topic of infidelity is continued towards the end of the record in “Tyrant” with Beyoncé demanding answers from the “Hangman”, most likely a symbol of infidelity referencing Jay Z’s infidelity.

With love and heartbreak as a common theme in “Cowboy Carter”, Beyoncé incorporates that in her research of the history of country music, including the influence of Black artists in American country music. “Ameriican Requiem” showcases Beyoncé’s experience at the Country Music Awards, with the lyrics “Used to say I spoke, ‘too country’/ and the rejection came, said ‘I wasn’t country ‘nough’/ Said I wouldn’t saddle up, but if that ain’t country, tell me what is?”. She addresses the racism she experienced after dipping into the country scene in 2016, segwaying into the next track on the album “Blackbiird”. The cover of the famous Beatles’ tune features up incoming Black country singers, Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts, Tanner Adell, and Tiera Kennedy, creating a modern twist on the over 50-years old song. The original Blackbird was inspired by the experiences of Black girls attending an all-white school, hammering home the cultural significance of Country music in this album, and on the track itself. The number-one hit from the album “Texas Hold ‘Em”, while a classic fun country track, addresses the issue of racism black country artists have faced, as Beyoncé is the first Black woman with a number-one country song, once again showcasing the importance of black people in American Country culture.

“Ya Ya”, an upbeat anthem, references the Chitlin Circuit, a collection of performance venues that sustained many Black musicians and dancers during the era of racial segregation in the US. Beyoncé references this historical fact, by also touching on the struggles of living in America as a black person, with lyrics like “Whole lotta red in that white and blue / History can’t be erased”. This journey is concluded in the closing track “Amen”, solidifying the history that inspired the album and the importance of the Black country artists that came before her.

The collaborations on “Cowboy Carter” continue the legacy and message Beyoncé is trying to put out. Famous country artists Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson make appearances on the album, encouraging listeners to acknowledge the Black history behind country music and welcome Beyoncé and fellow Black artists into the country scene. Adding incoming Black country singers Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts, Tanner Adell, and Tiera Kennedy with incoming artist Shaboozey, who mixes country with hip hop, rock, and Americana, allows for listeners to encourage new artists, and solidifies the history behind Country music. Linda Martell, the first commercially successful black female artist in country music, is also featured on this album, with Beyoncé playing tribute to the success of black country artists before her. Martell eventually left country music after disputes with her manager Shelby Singleton Jr, allowing Beyoncé to give her a resurgence. Famous pop artists Post Malone and Miley Cyrus are also included on “Cowboy Carter”, adding to another important part of the record, genre bending.

While some may believe that “Cowboy Carter” is a country album, many listeners would agree that it is more of a country themed album, due to the different genres and styles that are incorporated. “Bodyguard,” a swinging, classic rock anthem, strays away from the classic country sound. However, in typical Beyoncé fashion, the track still includes lyrics that represent a country theme, and an instrumental that reminds listeners of the country. “Daughter” gives listeners a taste of opera, with a segment of the Italian opera song Caro Mio Ben, which segways into ‘Spaghettii” a rap song, featuring Shaboozey. Listeners also get many R&B tracks, including “Tyrant”, “Desert Eagle” and “II Hands II Heaven”, which while taking part in a genre different to country, include country terms, such as “do-si-do” and “giddy-up”, to remind you of its origins in country. “Ya, Ya” is an upbeat rock song that incorporates samples from “These Boots Were Made for Walkn’” by Lee Hazelwood and “Good Vibrations” by The Beach Boys.

“Cowboy Carter” delves into the route of country music, inspiring myself and other listeners to learn and embrace the origins of American country music. By bringing up the issues with Black people in country music, such as the racism she faced at the 2016 Country Music Awards, Beyoncé claps back at haters through 27 tracks of pure culture and beauty, creating a splendid Act II to her trilogy of albums.

Taylor Swift’s new album breaks records

Swift once again proves she is a force to be reckoned with

American pop star and billionaire Taylor Swift released her newest album this past weekend, The Tortured Poet’s Department, and it is already breaking records left right and center.

The album was announced at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4th after Swift won Best Pop Vocal Album for her previous studio album Midnights, and it has already surpassed Midnights in first day streaming numbers, proving that fans cannot get enough of Swift’s music.

Spotify announced a day before the album released that The Tortured Poet’s Department broke the record for the most pre-saved album in Spotify history. When the album was released, Spotify announced that not only had the album become the most streamed album in a single day in 2024, but of all time, breaking the record previously held by Swift’s previous album Midnights, according to Variety.

The album was also the most streamed album in a single day on Amazon Music and Apple Music, making it Swift’s most popular album to date, according to Today and Apple Music via Instagram. The Tortured Poet’s Department was also the largest music pre-order of all time, according to Today.

The US Billboard charts also released that the album sold 1.4 million copies in traditional album sales, according to initial reports from Luminate, with 243.4 million on-demand audio streams on opening day.

“The song Down Bad is so catchy,” said NECC student Matt Scharn.

The Tortured Poet’s Department originally had 16 tracks, coming in at just over an hour. However, Swift announced via Instagram only 2 hours after the release that she released The Tortured Poet’s Department: The Anthology the secret second half of the album. The second half includes 15 new songs, making the entire album come in at 2 hours and 2 minutes.

“I love how she released a regular album and then not even 24 hours later she released the deluxe version,” said NECC student Janie Dunn. “It’s so fun.”

The album received “generally favorable reviews” from critics, coming in at a 77 out of 100 from Metacritic.

Critics praised the album for its songwriting, musical composition, and emotion, with many critics saying that it is her strongest album to date. However, despite record breaking numbers, many critics felt The Tortured Poets Department was one of Swift’s weaker entries, finding the lyrics to be weak and the allusions in the album to pretend to have emotional depth.

In true Taylor Swift fashion, many fans have already begun decoding the new tracks. Many fans and critics have noticed the songs revolve around her relationships, especially her ex, English actor Joe Alwyn and most recent ex, Matty Healy, lead vocalist for the band the 1975.

Songs such as “So Long, London”, “loml”, and the title track “The Tortured Poets Department”, are all rumored to be written about Joe Alwyn, according to Cosmopolitan.

Fans also took notice of the song “thanK you alMee”, which many believe references the famous feud between Swift and celebrity Kim Kardashian.

“The song supposedly being about Kim Kardashian annoys be,” Dunn added. “I feel like she’s just dragging out this feud from years ago.”

Despite many negative reviews, the positive reviews have outweighed the negative ones, allowing for Swift to dominate the pop scene once again. “The Tortured Poets Department” is now streaming.

Kung Fu Panda 4: Another Hollywood remake

Kung Fu Panda 4, the fourth installment to the hit children’s movie series, hit theatres on March 8th to mostly positive reviews from critics but some negative reviews from past fans and audiences. The film, which includes Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, and Ian McShane reprising their roles from the previous movies and Awkawfina, Key Huy Quan, and Viola Davis joining the cast for the new installment, involves Po finding and training his successor as the new Dragon Warrior.

As of its 3rd week in theatres, Kung Fu Panda 4 has surpassed its predecessor, Kung Fu Panda 3, at the box office with a $153 million gross in the US, according to BoxOfficeMojo. The film debuted at $58 million, topping the box office opening weekend, and making it the highest opening weekend for a DreamWorks Animation film in 12 years, according to Cartoon Brew. Many critics praised the film, including praise of Black’s performance from Frank Scheck of the Hollywood Reporter and praise of the film’s art direction from Claire Shaffer of the New York Times.

However, despite mostly positive reviews from critics, the film’s release has sparked negative reviews online and from some other critics. The Boston Globes’ Odie Henderson expressed disappointment in the film’s villain, voiced by Viola Davis, with the Telegraph awarding the movie two out of five stars.

“I found the villain to be really boring,” said NECC Art and Design student Allison Palumbo. “Her personality and motivations were super cookie-cutter, therefore she didn’t really feel threatening at all. She also didn’t have any connections with any of the characters like the previous villains did, making it hard for the audience to believe she’s a convincing villian.”

Many users online who watched and discussed the movie also expressed their dislike for the lack of fan favorite characters “The Furious Five,” played respectively by Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogan, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, and David Cross. Oliver Ehrhardt of the Daily Cardinal expressed his disappointment in this by stating that the best part of the film was the end credit scene, in which the Furious Five make their only appearance in the film.

“The Furious Five’s dynamic with Po is super interesting and fun to watch, so it was very disappointing that they were not in it,” added Palumbo. “I don’t know why DreamWorks keeps putting Po with other characters, when there is already a good dynamic with the Furious Five.”

With the release of Kung Fu Panda 4, an online conversation has resurfaced regarding why Hollywood is desperate to create reboots, sequels, or revivals instead of creating new work. Many online users noted that most of the upcoming movies slated for 2024 are either remakes, reboots, sequels, or based on an existing market and brand name, claiming that the success of Kung Fu Panda 4 was due to the franchises previous movie’s success. Fans of the first 3 movies have pointed out that the 4th installment’s success was also due to DreamWorks bringing back the fan favorite villain “Tai Lung”, despite his defeat at the end of the first film.

“Movie makers just want more money,” said Haverhill resident Hannah Kiernan. “An easy way to do that is remaking something, so even if the work is not amazing, they are still getting money for work that is not good.”

Many people who have participated in this debate have also noted the importance of nostalgia, especially with the making of the newest Kung Fu Panda movie. The original Kung Fu Panda movie was released in 2008, making it 16 years old, with many of the audience of that movie coming back to watch the newest installment grown up.

“The general population, especially Gen Z, has a crazy bias for nostalgia,” said Haverhill resident Kaelyn Kellett. “The movie doesn’t even have to be good, but if it reminds people of a childlike wonder than the general population is down to see it.”

Kung Fu Panda 4 is playing in theatres now.

The People’s Choice Awards: Memorable moments with viral video from Billie Eilish

The People’s Choice Awards were held in Santa Monica, California on February 18th, with many stars including Margot Robbie, Luke Combs, Lenny Kravitz and Taylor Swift taking home big awards. The 2024 awards, hosted by Simu Liu, aired live on NBC, Peacock and E! with the number of categories expanding to 45.

The night was filled with memorable and award-winning moments, many of which were talked about on social media in the next couple days. Noteworthy news from the awards were Greta Gerwig’s Barbie sweeping the film category, including winning “Movie of the Year”, “Comedy Movie of the Year”, “Male Movie Star of the Year”, “Female Movie Star of the Year”, and “Movie Performance of the Year”. America Ferrera, supporting actress in Barbie took the stage that night to accept The Movie Performance of the Year award.

“It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of such a bold and inspiring masterpiece and to get to speak words of truth that so many of us needed to hear out loud,” Ferrera stated. “[Barbie] is an invitation to all of us to embrace our full selves as we already are; uniquely, gloriously and perfectly human.”

“I love that both Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie won Male and Female movie star of the year,” said NECC student and Journalism Major Janie Dunn. “It worked out so well.”

Other notable wins of the night included Billie Eilish for her TV performance in the show Swarm, Taylor Swift for Female Artist of the Year and Pop Artist of the Year.

“I’m not surprised Taylor Swift won in every category she was nominated in,” Dunn added. “I am surprised that Billie Eilish won TV Performance of the Year considering no one has really seen the show she was in. Ayo Edibiri was nominated in that category, and she has been winning frequently at other award shows.”

Billie Eilish was not only talked about for her win during the awards. In a video that went viral on social media, the singer can be seen speaking about the amount of “TikTokers” at the event. She was seated next to Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, in which she could be heard speaking on the number of creators at the event.

“There’s some, like, Tiktokers here,” Eilish said on the video. This sparked a debate on social media, specifically on X, in which the video has been viewed over 2.7 million times.

“It’s a little weird that they’re at the event,” said Haverhill resident and Journalism minor Hailey Prunier. “I do think that it is a bit more acceptable for them to be at the People’s Choice Awards, since it’s geared a lot more towards the public. If they were at the Oscars or Grammys, it would definitely be a little weird.”

Tana Mongeau, James Charles, and Alix Earle were among some of the many influencers who were invited to the event. Many social media users who saw the video agreed with Eilish and commented on the recent award shows that social media influencers have been invited too.

“She’s right, TikTokers have no business being in award shows,” user @CrisVqz27 wrote on X, criticizing the number of influencers at the People’s Choice Awards.

“I think influencers who have lots of followers over multiple platforms should be allowed to go to awards like the People’s Choice Awards, since it will bring in a wider audience,” said NECC student and marketing major Josh Pasciuto. “However, if someone is just getting popular, it makes it illegitimate if they come to the event over someone who put in the effort in other forms of entertainment.”

The People’s Choice Awards had many other memorable moments including wins from Beyonce, Ice Spice and Jennifer Aniston. Adam Sandler accepted the People’s Icon Award after giving a hilarious and memorable speech, with Lenny Kravitz also receiving the Music Icon Award. Viewers can see the full list of winners on the People Magazine website.

Jay Z criticizes the Grammys, sparking debate about award issue

American rapper Jay-Z, who went on stage to accept the Dr. Dr Global Impact Award, called out the Grammys for their snubs against his wife, famous singer Beyoncé. During the televised event, Jay-Z was presented with the award, which honors Black musicians who have influenced the industry, celebrating his achievements in the music and hip-hop community.

“It was interesting to watch this moment live,” said Haverhill resident Julia Rodgers, “I totally agree with him.”

Jay-Z took the stage,  bringing up his daughter Blue Ivy. After thanking Dr Dre, who was at the awards, and the Black Music Collective, he then referenced a boycott of the awards done in 1989 by Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff after the presentation of the best rap performance category wouldn’t be televised.

“We love y’all. We want y’all to get it right,” he then said. “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than anyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys never won album of the year. That doesn’t work.”

Beyonce, nominated for album of the year 4 times, has made award-show history by winning 32 Grammy awards, making her the most awarded person in Grammy history. While she did win best dance/electronic album for her 2022 album “Renaissance” at the 2023 Grammys, many fans felt she was snubbed for the album of the year category. Many Grammy viewers noted that no black woman has won that award since “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” in 1999.

“I was shocked Taylor won album of the year,” said Haverhill resident Max Popoloski, “I felt other artists were cheated by this.”

Jay-Z’s speech while accepting the award, sparked an ongoing debate, with many people pointing out a racial bias and ignoring many black artists who have greatly influenced the industry. Artists such as Kelly Rowland, former member of Destiny’s Child with Beyonce, DJ Khaled and rapper Tyler, the Creator have spoken against the Grammys for how Black artists are treated.

“Some of you are going to go home tonight and feel like you’ve been robbed,” Jay-Z later added in his speech. “Some of you may get robbed. Some of you don’t belong in the category.”

While it is unclear who Jay-Z was speaking about, many internet users have given their opinions on the situation, sparking controversy immediately after the award show.

“I liked Jay Z speech. Sometimes you got to let folks know what it is out loud,” one X user said.

However, some users felt differently, and had mixed opinions on the issue.

“Jay Z’s acceptance speech was the truth; however, it would have held more weight for me if they didn’t attend,” another x user wrote. “I totally understand wanting to be recognized for your work, who wouldn’t? But at this point, if you truly believe what you’re saying, what is the point showing up every year and accepting their awards?”

Jay Z concluded his speech at the awards by advising artists not to give up, encouraging them to continue with their work until they receive the recognition they deserve, resonating with many people in the audience and online. The Brooklyn rapper left the awards show shortly after his speech.

Disney’s “Wish” another failure at the box office

Disney’s newest animated feature “Wish” failed to place first at the box office over Thanksgiving weekend, making it one of the worst openings for a Disney movie in recent years.

The film, which was directed by Chris Buck, known for directing movies such as “Tarzan” and “Frozen”, and Fawn Verrasunthron in her directorial debut, was initially projected to gross $40- 45 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, according to Deadline.

However, after low openings both on its first day and on Thanksgiving, projections were lowered to $32 million, eventually earning $31.7 million despite a $200 million budget.

“Wish” ended up debuting in third place at the box office behind Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon”, and Lionsgate’s “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, which took the top spot at the box office for the second week in a row. Many critics believed that another animated movie “Trolls Band Together” ate into “Wish” ticket sales, according to CNBC.

“Wish” tells the story of Asha, a 17-year-old girl who journeys to save her Kingdom from an evil king by making a plea to the stars for help. The animated film stars Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Angelique, and Victor Garber in starring roles.

“Wish” was recorded to have fallen behind the opening weekend gross of nearly every other film produced by Disney, except for movies like “Strange World” and “Raya and the Last Dragon”. This film was marketed as a celebration of 100 years of storytelling for Disney, making its underperformance more recognizable with fans.

The box office failure of “Wish” is also extending an unfortunate pattern for Disney, as many recent animated features from the company have been surpassed at the box office.

“The last several Disney films have been just fine,” said film student and Disney lover Eli Bourne. “Many people probably didn’t want to see it due to general audience fatigue.”

Many fans of the company and others have commented on “Wish” even before its release making the lackluster box office numbers expected.

According to Screen Rant, Disney’s marketing and reviews following the movie have been mediocre. Rotton Tomatoes rated the movie a 50%, claiming the film was predictable and boring, leaving too many people being uninspired to see “Wish” in theatres.

Other reviews, such as from Audrey Fox from Looper rated the film a 4/10, and explained that “the soundtrack was a hit-or-miss and the plot struggles with combining modern and traditional storytelling,” according to Looper.

Fans of Disney have also pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the outcome of Disney’s animated movies, explaining that streaming has affected Disney’s marketing and box office numbers.

“Disney has watered down their reputation over the last few years,” Bourne added, “I think the general perception is heading towards ‘well the last few weren’t great, so I don’t know if I’ll see this one’”

Social media is also seen as a reason for the poor performance from “Wish” as many users commented on the animation and the songs of the film.

TikTok user @klaudiasays commented on the stylistic choice from song writers Julia Micheals and Benjamin Rice, both of who are successful writers for pop music, as opposed to musicals.

However, X (formerly Twitter) user @Triple Z_87 adored the animation, a combination of watercolor animation and computer animation, and the nod to past Disney works.

Disney’s “Wish” is playing in theatres now.

Pete Davidson and Friends: Does the former SNL star still have it?

30-year-old comedian Pete Davidson recently stopped at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston during his ongoing “Pete Davidson and Friends Tour”. The show, which lasted approximately 120 minutes, gave audiences a tase of the edgy, energetic, and funny comedian that many fans have grown to love.

Davidson, who started his career with minor guest roles in shows such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and gained fame and relevance as a “Saturday Night Live” cast member for eight seasons, provided the audience with personal humor and jokes making him relatable for the audience.

While the Wilbur Theatre is about as old and in need of upgrading as a theatre can be, we were immediately let into the theatre and easily found our seats with the help of the friendly staff. Upon entering, you are required to lock up your phone and other electronic devices, such as an Apple Watch, allowing for no use until the end of the show.

Fortunately, this was expected and advertised and allowed for guests to maintain possession of their devices throughout the show, just with no use. After about thirty minutes of waiting and pondering what the time was without any electronics, the show began.

The show opened with three acts before Davidson, Dave Sirus, Joey Gay, and finally Ricky Velez, each getting about a 10–15-minute slot to perform. Sirus, while giving the audience a taste of his insights on relationships and his time as an SNL writer, was a tame act whencompared to his follow-ups, making Joey Gay’s set much more shocking.

Gay’s loud and intimidating presence needed no microphone as you could hear him all the way from the back. However, his shocking jokes and humor caused me to groan, since his least offensive jokes were his most humorous. Finally, Ricky Velez finishes the opening acts with both political andsatirical humor that worked on almost every level. Velez had high audience interaction and delivered jokes in a deadpan manner, receiving uproars of laughter from the audience.

Eventually Davidson made it on the stage, delivering about 80 minutes of hilarious content. Davidson introduced the audience to his life of sobriety and told tales of his time in rehab, including his attempt at learning new hobbies, along with a joke about meeting an over 90-year-old man in rehab who was “attempting to turn his life around.”

The comic did a bit on his recent run in with the law, after he hit a house driving back in March. Davidson made light of the fact he was completely sober while driving and that the homeowners tore down the house after it happened making it look like Davidson had destroyed their home.

Davidson also mentioned his mother frequently throughout the set, including a bit where he calls attention to his mother’s lack of pursuing romance since the passing of his father, making light of a sad story.

However, the former SNL star’s bit that shined that most was an almost 40-minute bit on his past stalker. Davidson told a story of his stalker who eventually made her way into his housecourtesy of his mother and gave him a not-so nice “present”.

He also made light of the fact that she was deemed “unfit” to stand at trial, enticing shrieks of laughter from the audience.

While I didn’t know much about Pete Davidson before seeing this show, his comedic timing and deadpan humor created an enjoyable experience that had me laughing even after the show ended. His set was extremely entertaining and kept my attention for all 90 minutes despite one bit being over 35 minutes long.

Davidson, who has not shied away from sharing his personal struggles with drug use and depression, made light of his issues in a way that audiences were not uncomfortable, but could relate to. It allowed audiences to laugh at situations that weren’t supposed to be funny. While his use of profanity and obscene jokes might have some audiences uncomfortable, overall there was never a dull moment with Pete Davidson. His comedy was completely unapologetic and showcased his great talent at interweaving comedy and storytelling to create a successful set.

If you get a chance, I’d recommend this show, along with viewing his upcoming comedy special that was filmed during the tour.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ breaks records despite negative reviews

The new “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie is a box office hit, breaking records for horror movies. As of No. 9,  “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has grossed a worldwide total of $224.8 million according to Box Office Mojo.

The film adaptation of the popular horror game series of the same name was estimated to earn $78 million on it’s opening weekend, in which it ended up debuting to $80 million in America and $132 million globally, according to Variety.

The film also became the highest grossing opening weekend for Blumhouse Productions, surpassing their rendition of “Halloween” in 2018.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which has been highly anticipated by fans, not only surpassed expectations at the box office.

The film, which made $10.3 million from Thursday night previews, generated the biggest-ever gross from a simultaneous streaming release. On opening weekend, the horror movie had the second best simultaneous streaming release, behind 2021’s “Black Widow”, which grossed $80.3 million its opening weekend according to Deadline. “Five Nights at Freddy’s” was also the second highest opening for a video game movie in history, behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in April also according to Deadline.

“It’s no surprise,” said NECC student and Art and Design major Alli Palumbo, “Five Nights at Freddy’s is super popular and has tons of fans.”

“Five Nights at Freddys,” which stars Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard, follows Mike Schmidt, a nighttime security guard at an abandoned family entertainment center, Freddy Fazbears Pizza.

However, he discovers the restaurant is overrun by deadly animatronics. The film is based on a series of video games, which have become wildly successful and have amassed a large fan base.

A movie version of the game series has reportedly been in the works since 2015, but got delayed for various reasons, according to Blumhouse Productions.

“The movie was really enjoyable,” said former NECC student Kate Cahill, “I liked it a lot.”

However, despite its success at the box office, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” received mostly negative reviews from critics.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 30%, with reviews averaging the movie 4.5/10.

Other critics, including some from The Guardian and The New York Times gave the movie a 2/5, and expressed their distaste in the lack of thrills and no genuine laughs.

Many critics also criticized the movie for the PG-13 rating.

Michael Phillips of the Chicago Times stated that “the premise very likely would’ve made more sense as a straight-up R-rated splatter fest.”

However, despite negative reviews, audiences seemed to love “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” giving the film an 89% on Rotton Tomatoes and an 8.1 on Metacritic.

The film had one of the biggest critic-audience gaps ever and is almost triple to score given by critics.

“The movie was made for fans,” Palumbo added, “The critics were not fans and didn’t understand it.”

“Five Nights at Freddy’s released in theatres on Oct. 27, and is now streaming on Peacock.

NECC offers online classes for cannabis careers

For students looking to further a career in the cannabis industry, Northern Essex  Community College is here to help. NECC is now offering 3 different courses relating to a career in the cannabis industry. These classes include Cannabis Cultivation Specialist Certificate,  Cannabis Retail Specialist Certificate, and Cannabis Extraction and Product Development Specialist Certificate, according to the NECC website. These classes are offered fully online and cost $800 each with payment plans available.

Each class includes instant access to the online program, expert instructors and top industry leaders, and access to the GF Institute Employer Network. Students will also earn a digital credential that can be published and advanced rankings for relevant job openings.

Each class also includes engaging video lectures, informative readings, and interactive activities, all designed to enhance knowledge on the cannabis cultivation, retail, and extraction and product development industry.

“I think NECC offering classes like this is such a good idea,” said Haverhill resident and Political Science major Julia Rodgers. “There’s so much stuff to learn about as well. I would love to learn about the industry.”

The cannabis industry is one that is growing at a high rate, with NECC becoming one of the only schools in the area to take advantage of it.

According to the NECC website there is now more legal cannabis workers than insurance sales agents, and 3 times as many cannabis workers than dentists in the United States, creating a higher need for schools like NECC to investin this booming industry.

The 2023 Vangst Cannabis Industry Salary Guide shows that students who invest in this program could end up making up to $150,000 a year, proving that the cannabis industry is a wildly growing investment.

Many students and educators expressed their support for the program, explaining that they believed it was a cool and interesting idea, including NECC student Josh Pasciuto and

“I think business wise, it’s a really good idea to get invested,” said Pasciuto. “It’s a  business where you could actually make a lot of money.”

“How else are people supposed to learn about a career in the cannabis industry,” added Haverhill resident Hannah Kiernan.

“It’s such a smart idea,” she said.

Many students also agreed that cannabis education is cannabis safety and showed their support for the program that way.

Haverhill resident and student Jordyn Kilroy expressed her agreement for cannabis education.

Award-winning American singer Beyoncé has just wrapped up her ninth concert tour, which has been breaking records left, right, and center. The tour opened in Stockholm, Sweden, earning $461.2 million over 5 months. In August, the tour became the highest-grossing tour by a female artist, which was previously held by Madonna’s “Sticky and Sweet Tour” in 2008, according to FOX. The ‘Renaissance World Tour’ has also become the highest-grossing tour by a Black artist in history, according to Evening Standard.

“It’s insanely impressive and deserved due to the work and energy she puts in,” NECC student and journalism major Demiya Silva said. “It’s extremely indicative of her talent.”

By the end of the tour, the “Cuff It” singer raked up $179 million for one month in

August, making it the highest grossing one-month gross for tours since 1985 according to Billboard. The record was previously held a month before by Beyonce at $127.6 million in July according to Billboard.

Beyoncé’s seventh studio album “RENAISSANCE” was released on July 29, 2022, with  critical acclaim. The “Single Ladies” singer announced the “Renaissance World Tour” on February 1st, 2023, much to fans’ excitement.

“I’ve seen clips of it on Twitter and TikTok,” Silva added, when asked about her thoughts on the “Renaissance World Tour”. “It seems really entertaining and fun.”

Along with making strides as an artist, Beyoncé has been making strides in the public eye, with Renaissance gaining attention online. Clips of the tour have garnered millions of views online, with fans expressing their enjoyment.

“It’s one of a kind,” said Haverhill resident and Biology Pre-Med and Theatre Arts double major Max Popoloski, “A tour like it has never been done before.”

The “Renaissance World Tour” has received critical acclaim from critics, many praising it for Beyoncé’s powerhouse singing and progressive themes. Vogue writer André-Naquian Wheeler praised the tour stating it “takes the idea of constant reinvention to unprecedented  heights”. Wheeler also praised Beyoncé’s wardrobe, in which different and intricate looks were shown throughout the tour.

“Her artistry is so well credited and extremely well deserved,” said NECC student Lexi Tavares. “Her impact on the music industry is so impressive.”

The “Renaissance World Tour has also been inspiring new trends online, specifically

Beyoncé’s mute challenge. During her performance of Renaissance’s 5th song “Energy,”

Beyoncé sings the lines, “Look around, everybody on mute,” leading to the entire stadium

becoming silent. The challenge has continued throughout the tour, along with becoming a trend

online.

“The challenge seems really entertaining and fun,” Tavares added. “The clips I’ve seen

online are super interesting.”
